It was produced by Illumination Entertainment for Universal Pictures, following the 2015 acquisition of the company by Comcast through NBCUniversal in January, 2016. The film is an adaptation of the Minion, a minor character created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio for the hit Despicable Me franchise, though Nelvana had previously licensed the rights to create a full series. It was released on July 10, 2015 in the United States, followed by Australia on July 13, New Zealand on July 15 and Malaysia on August 4. The film is produced by Illumination Entertainment (headed by Chris Meledandri), who co-wrote it with Brian Lynch (of Tom Green Show). Producers for Universal Pictures included Donna Langley and Janet Healy. Chris Renaud – a regular collaborator with Meledandri – was the executive producer. The film was released in 2D, 3D and 3D IMAX, making it the first animated feature film to be released in 3D IMAX, as well as being the second non-IMAX original film to be converted to IMAX 3D after Jackass 3D. The film has been adapted into a series of graphic novels published by Titan Comics since 2016. A sequel, titled Minions 2 , will be released on July 3, 2020.
